Levels of Technology Use

The "Powerful Ingredients for Blended Learning" framework utilizes the following levels of technology use. These build on the ACOT Integration Stages. Educators are encouraged to progress from level 1 to level 4 use with a variety of powerful ingredients for blended learning.

    1. Awareness

    2. Personal Use

    3. Professional Use (copied)

    4. Professional Use (invented)

When considering educators' uses of technology, it is important to remember the technology adoption lifecycle and Roger's Bell Curve. Strategies which successful with the innovator / early adopter group will often NOT be embraced by early/late majority and laggard teachers.

Accommodating or Transformative?

In addition to the above 4 levels, the Powerful Ingredients framework asks the following question about any learning task utilizing technology:

    1. Accommodating? Tech use which accommodates replicates existing analog (non-digital) learning or communication.

    2. Transformative? Transformative tech use opens new doors of possibilities for learning and/or communication which would not be available without the technology.

The Powerful Ingredients Administrative Walkthrough Rubric can be used by administrators to:

    1. Develop a shared vocabulary for appropriate technology integration with educators

    2. Communicate and record observations about appropriate technology integration in lessons

    3. Encourage educators to utilize "key ingredients" in their lesson plans and student activities.
