3 February 2010: Tell A Story in 5 Photos and Integrated Unit Plan

1- Overview

One of the most important literacy skills we need to model, practice, and require of our students today is TALKING WITH PICTURES. Building with our introduction last week to digital storytelling, we will explore and complete a "tell a story in 5 photos" activity in class. We will introduce the process of designing and creating an integrated unit plan using the provided Intel CD. This integrated unit plan will included in your electronic portfolio for UCO. This week we want to start thinking about project based learning, potential topics for our integrated unit plan, and the ways we can use different technology tools effectively in the design of this digitally-infused lesson. Opportunities to evaluate our course and your learning to date this semester in T4T will also be provided via an anonymous survey, as well as a survey to choose dates/times for upcoming "open lab" sessions.

  2. Class Activity: Explore the "Digital Native Map" from the PBS Frontline Project: Digital Nation
    1. Find at least three facts about "digital natives" you did not know previously.
    2. Share these with a neighbor (when prompted by your instructor)
    3. Share these with our class (when prompted)
  3. Updates from last week:
    1. The VoiceThread mini-project due date has been moved BACK one week, to Week 6. (17 February)
    2. 7 screencasts demonstrating the steps to follow in creating a VoiceThread account, finding copyright friendly images, and creating a VoiceThread digital story have been added to our T4T FAQ blog.
    3. Since UCO was closed on Friday for our open lab Q&A, it was held online via Ustream. A video archive for this session is available on our shared learning blog.
    4. Remember we will have another open lab opportunity this Friday, February 5 from 9 - 10:50 am in room 110. (our regular classroom)
    5. Grades for last week's "Quarterly Checkup Quiz 1" in WebCT/Blackboard will be available in the Gradebook of WebCT/Blackboard by Friday, February 5th.
  4. In class, discuss how T4T is going so far for you.

    1. Visual literacy is very important to acknowledge and teach in our media-centric society. (Reference: Oakland Museum of California)
    2. The PBS Teacher's Resource, "Focus on Digital Literacy" PDF includes excellent links and ideas related to visual literacy.
    3. One way to explore and practice digital literacy is to complete a "Tell A Story in 5 Pictures" activity. (This eHow article provides good suggestions about planning your story)
    4. Visit the "Tell a Story in 5 Photos for Educators" Flickr Group and view some examples.

  7. Unit Plan
    1. Discuss the UCO College of Education ePortfolio artifact requirement.
    2. Explore the Intel Teach Program (Essentials Course) CD, and specifically the Integrated Unit Plan section.
    3. Discuss:
      1. Unit Plan Template (Shared as a downloadable Google Doc)
      2. IME 3312 Portfolio Artifact Rubric (Shared as a downloadable Google Doc)
    4. Brainstorm ideas for possible unit plan lesson topics.

3- Assignments

  1. Following the model discussed in class, post your own "Story in 5 Photos" to your T4T Reflection blog.
    1. Use either Compfight or Flickr Storm to find the images you use for this 5 frame story. (Remember screencasts are available demonstrating how to use these sites!)
    2. Be sure to include links to the ORIGINAL images you use, to give ATTRIBUTION to the original photographer / copyright holder.
  2. Watch Project Learning: An Overview (9:46) and post a reflection on your T4T blog using our video reflection rubric.
  3. Watch Digiteens: Digital Citizenship by Digital Teenagers (15:25) and post a reflection on your T4T blog using our video reflection rubric.
  4. Read and share a thoughtful, constructive comment on at least TWO posts written by your T4T classmates. Use our T4T Netvibes Page and our T4T Class Blog Bundle (from Wesley's Google Reader) to find posts.
  5. Start thinking about possible topics for your own Integrated Unit Plan this semester.
